Eight winter days. Two behind the wheel, six on public transport. Built backwards from the light rather than the clock — because in August you get ten and three-quarter hours of it, and that is the only real constraint.
Solo-traveller planning estimate. The selected total includes the A$142 Premium Loss and Damage Waiver, fuel, listed admissions, public transport and meal allowances. Fuel assumes roughly 650–710 km, 7–9 L/100 km and A$2.00–2.20/L; the rental model will decide the real figure. Excluded: flights, accommodation, base prepaid car hire, shopping, travel insurance, any passport-dependent AustralianETA A$20 fee, and alcohol beyond the explicit Days 5 and 7 drink allowances. Fuel and the waiver are per rental vehicle; other figures are per adult.
The beach staircase has been shut since May 2023 after a rockfall and geotechnical inspection. GORCAPA says the remediation project is aiming to reopen the beach by October 2026, subject to planning approval — so it will not be available on 17 August.
Viewing now runs from the dedicated platform in two booked sessions each night. Sessions are about 45 minutes and begin roughly 30 and 90 minutes after sunset. Tickets are free, released every Tuesday from 10:00 AEST for the following week's sessions, and the official site says they book out quickly.
The draft's advice was "swap drivers if there are two of you". There aren't. The Apollo Bay → Lavers Hill → Twelve Apostles stretch is the worst of it — forest, no phone signal, kangaroos and wallabies at dusk — and you'd hit it at hour nine of your day. Port Campbell is booked, so the night can't move.
Published winter reception hours conflict: the NRMA guest-information PDF says 08:00–18:00, while the current BIG4 partner page says reception may run to 18:30. Plan A's 18:15 arrival has almost no disruption buffer; Plan B's 18:35 arrival is later than both. You also leave before reception opens.
The current Wednesday service reaches Avalon at 13:40, 75 minutes before JQ608. SkyBus explicitly says Avalon City Express meets major departing flights. Jetstar's domestic check-in and bag drop closes at 14:15, while the boarding gate closes at 14:35.
The gallery no longer works as the centrepiece of Monday afternoon, and the original Eureka Flag is displayed at the Eureka Centre, not in the closed gallery building.
Captain Cook lists Wharf 6 as closed from 20 July – 28 August 2026, with its affected services using Commissioner's Steps, roughly 170 metres towards the Harbour Bridge. The Manly ferry is unaffected; it runs from Wharf 3.
You can tap a Visa or Mastercard card, phone or watch on metropolitan trains, trams and buses. It charges the same fares as Myki. Public-transport fares are also half price until 1 January 2027: Zone 1+2 is $2.85 for two hours and $5.70 for a weekday day cap.
The new Visitor Experience Centre is due later in 2026. In August, expect construction fencing, temporary parking arrangements and diversions around the precinct; the new centre's future booking and fee model is not yet part of this trip.
Current projects can introduce reduced speeds, traffic control and short delays on the coast road and alternatives such as Colac–Lavers Hill Road and Cobden–Port Campbell Road. No trip-long closure was listed in the official project information checked on 11 August.
Sovereign Hill is closed to general visitors on Mondays. Queen Victoria Market is open Tuesday, 06:00–15:00, with specialty shops from 09:00. NGV is open daily, 10:00–17:00, and its general collection is free. Sydney's adult contactless caps are $19.30 Monday–Thursday and $9.65 Friday–Sunday. August is also peak whale season, although sightings and sea conditions are never guaranteed.
Roughly 640 km of driving across two days. Everything after Wednesday lunchtime is public transport — no car, no private transfers, no parking, and never more than a tap of your phone.
Sunset at Port Campbell is 17:51 and civil dusk is 18:19. That's the budget. Everything below is built to get you there inside it, on your first day of left-hand driving, alone, off a long-haul. The BOM forecast issued 14 August is favourable: Apollo Bay 9–14°C and Port Campbell 4–16°C, both with a 20% rain chance and 0 mm forecast. Morning fog is possible, so check BOM and VicTraffic once more before leaving MEL.
| Leg | Distance | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| MEL → Torquay | 105 km | 1h20 | The planned M80 / Princes route is toll-free. Confirm the rental's toll policy only in case navigation accidentally reroutes onto CityLink, EastLink or the West Gate Tunnel. |
| Torquay → Apollo Bay | 95 km | 2h00 + stops | Coastal, 60–80 km/h, constant curves. Slower than the map claims. |
| Apollo Bay → Twelve Apostles | 90 km | 1h30 | The Otways. The demanding section, and the one to bail out of. |
| Inland bail-out via Colac | 150 km | 1h50 | Easier road, arrives in daylight, skips the forest entirely. |
| Before you leave the airport: offline maps downloaded · toll policy confirmed · unlimited km and the Great Ocean Road confirmed inside the permitted area · phone mounted · roadside-assistance number saved · tank full. | |||
Sunrise at Port Campbell is 07:12. The major viewpoints are usually much quieter before the mid-morning coaches, which is the honest reason to have slept out here rather than pushed on. The BOM forecast issued 14 August is dry: Port Campbell 5–18°C and Ballarat 3–16°C, both with a 10% rain chance; allow for a cold, possibly foggy start. Then choose: gold-rush heritage inland, or whales on the way home.
Start with the breakfast included at your hotel, then make Queen Victoria Market a browse-and-optional-snack stop. The 14 August BOM forecast is mostly sunny, 9–19°C, with a 10% rain chance. CBD, market and Federation Square tram trips sit inside the Free Tram Zone; NGV, the gardens, Shrine, Southbank and St Kilda are outside it if you ride. Use the same full-fare Visa or Mastercard device on every paid trip so the correct cap is applied.
| What | Cost | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Free Tram Zone | $0 | The CBD grid plus Docklands, Queen Victoria Market and Fed Square. Do not tap inside it. NGV, Southbank and the gardens/Shrine are easy to walk to, but a tram beyond the signed boundary requires a valid fare. |
| Full-fare contactless | same as Myki | Tap a Visa or Mastercard card, phone or watch on trains, trams and buses. Keep using the same device so caps apply correctly. |
| Zone 1+2 fares | $2.85 / $5.70 | Two-hour fare / weekday daily cap while the statewide half-price fare period runs through 1 January 2027. |
| Tram 96 → St Kilda | 2-hour fare | Bourke Street → St Kilda, about 30 minutes. Touch on after leaving the Free Tram Zone; tram passengers normally do not need to touch off. |
| Myki | optional | Only needed here if you require a concession, pass or another product not supported by full-fare contactless. |
| Leg | Option | Time | Cost |

| CBD → Avalon | SkyBus Avalon City Express, 12:30 from Bay 74 — recommended | 70 min | $29 |
| CBD → Avalon | 08:05 SkyBus, arrives 09:15 — very large disruption buffer | 70 min | $29 |
| CBD → Avalon | Pre-booked taxi or rideshare around 11:30 — for assistance, unusual luggage or extra margin | ~60–75 min | ~$100–140 |
| SYD T2 → Potts Point | Airport Link train via Central → Kings Cross | ~25 min | A$22.94 peak |
| SYD T2 → Potts Point | Bus 420 to Mascot station, then train — dodges the gate fee | ~50 min | ~$7 |
| SYD T2 → Potts Point | Taxi or rideshare | ~25 min | $45–55 |
| The Sydney Airport station access fee is $18.61 and is added to the normal train fare. It is outside the ordinary travel caps, but has its own $37.75 weekly access-fee cap. The bus-420 workaround avoids the fee but adds a transfer and time with luggage. | |||
Start on foot from Potts Point, descend to Woolloomooloo, then climb gently into the Domain before crossing the harbour. The 14 August BOM forecast for the Sydney coast is 10–19°C, partly cloudy, with a 30% rain chance and 0–1 mm forecast. The Manly ferry is one of Sydney's best-value views, and you're taking it in the quieter direction at exactly the right hour.
| Leg | Mode | Fare |
|---|---|---|
| Potts Point → the Domain | Walk, 30 min, downhill then uphill | $0 |
| Circular Quay ⇄ Manly | Ferry F1, Wharf 3; check live departures | A$9.20 each way |
| Manly → North Head | Bus 161, or walk 45 min | toward day cap |
| Circular Quay → Kings Cross | Train T4 via Martin Place, 6 min | toward day cap |
| Thursday's daily cap is about $19.30. Two ferries plus a couple of trains puts you close to it, so anything extra today is effectively free. Just tap your phone — no Opal card needed — but tap on and off every single time, or you're charged the maximum fare for the trip. | ||
Your one big day trip, and there are two good answers. West into the Blue Mountains for the dramatic landscape — best in winter, when the eucalypt haze that names them is strongest — or north to Newcastle for six beaches, Edwardian ocean baths and a flat clifftop path that handles low cloud better. Either way it's a fare-capped Friday, so the whole day's transport costs under ten dollars.
| Leg | Mode | Fare |
|---|---|---|
| Kings Cross → Central | T4 train, ~6 min | ~$3.20 |
| Central → Katoomba | Blue Mountains line, ~2h | ~$7.90 off-peak |
| Around Katoomba | Bus 686 loop, Echo Point ⇄ Scenic World | ~$2.40 |
| Return | Same in reverse | — |
| Friday daily cap | Everything above, capped | $9.65 |
| Friday to Sunday the adult Opal cap is $9.65. The public transport needs no reservation — just tap on and off — but the exact Blue Mountains service is changed by trackwork, and Scenic World should be booked online. | ||
Australia's second-oldest city, and the one Sydneysiders are quietly smug about. A working coal harbour on one side, six beaches and a chain of Edwardian ocean baths on the other, joined by a 6 km clifftop path. Flat, sunny, and — unlike the mountains — it does not fog out.
| Leg | Mode | Fare |
|---|---|---|
| Kings Cross → Central | T4 train, ~6 min | ~$3.20 |
| Central → Newcastle Interchange | Central Coast & Newcastle Line · ~2h33 · every 30 min · direct | ~$8 off-peak |
| Interchange → Newcastle Beach | Newcastle Light Rail, six stops | ~A$0.31 with transfer |
| Merewether → town | Bus, or walk back along the Bathers Way | ~$2.40 |
| Friday daily cap | Everything above, capped | $9.65 |
| Newcastle is inside the Opal network, so the Friday–Sunday $9.65 adult cap applies exactly as it does for Katoomba, and the 30% off-peak discount runs all day Friday. Tap on and off. No booking, no seat reservation. | ||
Your dates sit on the changeover — the last humpbacks heading north and the first heading south pass at the same time, and August is when young males breach most theatrically. You can meet them from a boat or from a clifftop. Both are good; only one can be cancelled by weather.
| Option | Time | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train via Central — recommended | ~30 min | A$21.64 | Sunday rail is off-peak: A$18.61 airport access plus A$3.03 rail. Together with Wednesday's airport access charge, the week's access fees total A$37.22—still below the separate A$37.75 weekly cap, so there is no further saving. |
| Train to Mascot, then bus 420 | ~55 min | roughly A$4–6 | Avoids the airport access fee but adds an outdoor transfer with luggage; Trip Planner sets the exact distance fare. |
| Taxi or rideshare | ~25 min | $50–60 | Simplest with bags. Sunday traffic is light. |
| If you need to move between terminals for any reason, the Airport Link train between T2/T3 and T1 takes two minutes; the free T-Bus shuttle takes ten and runs every fifteen minutes, 05:30–22:30. | |||

Typical August planning guide · not the live forecast
| Where | Day | Night | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melbourne | ~14°C | ~7°C | Wet, windy, changeable within the hour |
| Great Ocean Road | ~13°C | ~7°C | Wind off the Southern Ocean; feels colder than it is |
| Sydney | ~18°C | ~9°C | Often the clearest, driest month of the winter |
| Blue Mountains | ~10°C | ~2°C | Fog, occasional frost, real cold on the escarpment |
A waterproof shell matters more than a thick coat — you'll be indoors and on transport constantly. Layers, one warm mid-layer for the mountains, gloves, and shoes you can walk 8 km in and stand on wet rock in. Sunscreen anyway: Australian winter UV still burns.

Roughly 10¾ hours of daylight. That's the constraint this whole plan is built around — not opening hours, not distance.
