Melbourne, the Great Ocean Road,
and Sydney

Eight winter days. Two behind the wheel, six on public transport. Built backwards from the light rather than the clock — because in August you get ten and three-quarter hours of it, and that is the only real constraint.

Reality check

Everything below was verified against a primary source

The beach staircase has been shut since May 2023, after a rockfall prompted a geotechnical survey that found a crack in the cliff face and serious decay in the stairs. The Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority still carries an active "Temporary Closure" notice, and the Victorian government has now named October 2026 as the reopening. Your draft spends a sunset slot and a 1h15 morning slot there, explicitly on "beach, Razorback, The Arch".

Fix → The clifftops are unaffected. Razorback, The Arch, Thunder Cave, Broken Head, the Tom & Eva platforms and the Mutton Bird Island lookout are all open — and they're the better photographs anyway. Budget 45 minutes, not 75, and stop calling it a beach stop. Sunset moves to the Twelve Apostles and Gibson Steps.

Your draft says "free, no booking (that's Phillip Island you're thinking of)". True until the $53m pier rebuild. Since October 2025 viewing runs from a new 150-metre elevated boardwalk in two ticketed one-hour sessions a night, capped at 150 people each. Tickets are free but released weekly on Tuesdays at 10:00 AEST, and have been going within minutes of release.

Fix → Your Melbourne night is a Tuesday. Set an alarm for 10:00 on 18 August and try for that evening — but treat it as a lottery, not a plan. The evening already has Lygon Street and the Skydeck in it. Don't build around penguins.

The draft's advice was "swap drivers if there are two of you". There aren't. The Apollo Bay → Lavers Hill → Twelve Apostles stretch is the worst of it — forest, no phone signal, kangaroos and wallabies at dusk — and you'd hit it at hour nine of your day. Port Campbell is booked, so the night can't move.

Fix → Move the Twelve Apostles to sunrise on Day 2. Sun up at 07:12, fifteen minutes from your bed, nobody there, and the stacks light from the east. That takes the deadline off Day 1 entirely — you drive to arrive, not to catch light. A hard decision point goes in at Apollo Bay, 16:00. Plan B keeps the sunset version if you land clean and feel strong.

Published Avalon City Express departures from Southern Cross are 04:00, 06:50, 07:30, 10:30, 13:30, 15:00 and 18:20, and the run takes about 90 minutes via Werribee. The 13:30 lands you at Avalon around 15:00 — five minutes after your flight leaves. Services do flex to meet flights, but you can't plan on one that isn't published.

Fix → Take the 10:30, arriving Avalon around 12:00. It's a long sit at a small airport; bring a book. Check out by 09:45. Backup if it's sold out: V/Line Geelong line to Lara (~50 min), then a ten-minute taxi.

NSW Maritime wharf upgrades run 20 July – 28 August 2026. Cruises that normally use Wharf 6 — including most whale-watching operators — board at Commissioner's Steps instead, roughly 170 metres towards the Harbour Bridge. Two flat minutes on foot, but easy to miss a boarding call over. The Manly ferry is unaffected; it runs from Wharf 3.

Fix → Whatever your ticket says, walk towards the bridge and look for Commissioner's Steps. Add fifteen minutes on Day 7.

Victoria began rolling out contactless bank-card payment in early 2026 — trains first, then buses and trams. Many readers on the network are still Myki-only, and the programme has already slipped by more than a year once. Sydney is the opposite: contactless has worked everywhere for years and no Opal card is needed.

Fix → Buy a Myki at Melbourne Airport or Southern Cross and load about $30. If tap-and-go is live by August, you've lost nothing. In Sydney, just tap your phone.

The new Visitor Experience Centre opens at the end of 2026 and brings timed bookings and a paid entry fee with it. In August 2026 the site is still free and unbooked, but expect hoardings, temporary car parking and diversions. GORCAPA has confirmed the fee and booking model will not extend to Gibson Steps or Loch Ard Gorge.

Fix → Nothing to do — you're travelling in the last free window. Just don't be surprised by the fencing.

Flash flooding closed the road in both directions between Lorne and Skenes Creek in mid-January, cutting off Wye River and Kennett River for days and forcing V/Line coaches inland. It reopened after repairs, and rehabilitation works were scheduled through 2026 on the road itself and on the inland alternatives — Colac–Lavers Hill Rd, Forrest–Apollo Bay Rd, Cobden–Port Campbell Rd, Princetown Rd.

Fix → Check VicTraffic the night before and again over breakfast. Your inland escape route may itself be under works. Kennett River Koala Walk on Grey River Road is open year-round and free.

Sovereign Hill really is closed Mondays — Tue–Sun 10:00–17:00 — so the Art Gallery of Ballarat substitution stands (daily 10–5, free, special exhibitions excepted; it also holds the original Eureka Flag). Queen Victoria Market is open Tuesday, 06:00–15:00, specialty shops from 09:00. Nothing clashes: City2Surf is Sunday 9 August, the Sydney Marathon is Sunday 30 August, Vivid ended 13 June. Manly ferry is a flat $8.39 Opal fare, 30 minutes, Circular Quay Wharf 3. And August is peak whale month — your dates sit right on the changeover between the northbound and southbound migrations.

Only take Plan B if all three are true

  • You're through the airport and moving by 09:45.
  • You're at Apollo Bay by 15:45.
  • You slept on the plane and don't feel the 3pm wall coming.
  • Two out of three isn't enough. Miss any one and revert to Plan A — the Apostles will be there at 07:15 tomorrow, in better light, with nobody in them.

The 16:00 Apollo Bay decision

  • On time and feeling fine → carry on over Lavers Hill as planned.
  • Behind, tired, or raining hard → take the inland route: Skenes Creek → Colac (C119) → Princes Hwy → Camperdown → Port Campbell. You lose the Otways and gain about 45 minutes of straighter, easier road, arriving well before dark.
  • Genuinely unsafe to continue → Apollo Bay has motels. Losing a booked Port Campbell night costs money. Hitting a tree at dusk on a forest road, alone, with no signal, costs rather more.
  • Kangaroos and wallabies are most active at dawn and in the hour either side of dusk, and Apollo Bay → Lavers Hill is where people hit them. If one is on the road: brake straight, don't swerve.

The honest trade

  • You add about two hours of driving on day two of a solo trip, most of it after 15:00.
  • Whales are not guaranteed. Some days Logans Beach has three mothers and calves; some days it has nothing at all.
  • You already have a second whale opportunity in Sydney on Day 7, from a boat, in the same peak season. Ballarat has no substitute later in the trip.
  • Take this only if wildlife genuinely beats heritage for you, and you're comfortable with the drive.

Australia's second-oldest city, and the one Sydneysiders are quietly smug about. A working coal harbour on one side, six beaches and a chain of Edwardian ocean baths on the other, joined by a 6 km clifftop path. Flat, sunny, and — unlike the mountains — it does not fog out.

Winter in the mountains

  • Katoomba runs 6–8°C colder than Sydney — think 10°C by day, 2°C in the morning. Wind on the escarpment makes it feel worse. Proper jacket, hat, gloves.
  • Fog and rain are common and the lookouts can white out completely. If Friday's forecast is bad, swap this with Saturday — the coast is fine in cloud, the mountains are not.
  • Sunset is 17:33, but the valleys darken from about 16:45. Don't start a descent after 15:00.
  • Phone signal is patchy off the main streets. Screenshot the return timetable before you leave Katoomba station.

Friday daily capEverything above, capped$9.65
Friday to Sunday the adult Opal cap drops to $9.65. You'll hit it before Penrith, which means the return journey, every bus and any evening trains are free. No booking, no reservation, no seat allocation — just tap on and off.

Why you might pick Newcastle over the mountains

  • Weather. Katoomba fogs in and the lookouts white out. Newcastle in August sits around 19°C and is clear more often than not. If Friday's forecast is poor, this is the swap.
  • It's flat. The Bathers Way is a sealed path at sea level. The Blue Mountains day means stairs, cliff edges and air 6–8°C colder.
  • Whales again. Newcastle sits directly on the migration route and the clifftop lookouts cost nothing.
  • Same Friday cap. Newcastle is inside the Opal network, so the day still caps at $9.65 — a five-hour return train journey for under ten dollars.

What you give up — and one knock-on

  • The landscape. The Three Sisters, the Jamison Valley and a 52° railway have no equivalent in Newcastle. If you only ever do one of these, do the mountains.
  • An extra hour on the train each way — 2h33 against about 2h.
  • Knock-on for Saturday: take Newcastle on Friday and you'll already have done a long coastal clifftop walk. In that case choose the whale cruise on Day 7 rather than Bondi to Coogee, or you'll be repeating yourself.

🌇 17:29🐋 changeover week

Your dates sit on the changeover — the last humpbacks heading north and the first heading south pass at the same time, and August is when young males breach most theatrically. You can meet them from a boat or from a clifftop. Both are good; only one can be cancelled by weather.

Booking the cruise

  • Pick a flexible fare. August seas off Sydney can be big and cruises are cancelled or rescheduled regularly. A free-reschedule ticket means a cancellation costs you nothing but the morning.
  • Book Saturday morning. If it's cancelled, switch straight to Option B rather than trying to squeeze it in before a 13:05 flight on Sunday.
  • Take a seasickness tablet 45 minutes before boarding whether or not you think you need one. Outside the Heads is not the harbour.

Sealed path, some stairs. Scan the water from the headlands: August humpbacks pass close enough to see from land, and Waverley Cemetery, with its graves stacked above the Pacific, is both the best vantage point and the most striking thing on this whole list.

Why this might be the better option

  • It's free, it's weatherproof in a way a boat isn't, and it's one of the great urban coastal walks anywhere.
  • You'll very likely see whales regardless — from a stable clifftop, without seasickness.
  • If the forecast for Friday was bad and you swapped the Blue Mountains to today, this is the day that moves.

🚗 Driving, solo, on the left

Before you leave the airport

  • Download offline maps for the whole Otways region — signal dies past Apollo Bay.
  • Set up the phone mount and audio before you move.
  • Photograph every panel of the car.
  • Sit for five minutes and find the indicators. Everyone wipes the windscreen at their first roundabout.

On the road

  • Keep left. The centre line stays by your right shoulder.
  • Fuel at Lorne, Apollo Bay or Port Campbell. Stations west of Apollo Bay are sparse and close early.
  • Kangaroos and wallabies at dawn and around dusk, worst on Apollo Bay → Lavers Hill. Brake straight, don't swerve.
  • Use the marked slow-vehicle turnouts. Nothing on this road is worth a queue behind you.
  • Check VicTraffic each morning. The road flooded badly in January 2026 and repairs continued through the year.

Because you're alone

  • Nobody will tell you you're tired. Stop every 90 minutes, even when you feel fine — especially on Day 1, when your body thinks it's the middle of the night.
  • Tell someone your rough plan and check in each evening. Signal is absent for long stretches of Day 1.
  • Emergency is 000. The roadside-assistance number goes into your phone at the rental desk, not later.
  • The 16:00 Apollo Bay decision is a real decision. Make it honestly.
