Melbourne, the Great Ocean Road,
and Sydney

Eight winter days. Two behind the wheel, six on public transport. Built backwards from the light rather than the clock — because in August you get ten and three-quarter hours of it, and that is the only real constraint.

Reality check

Short alerts first; open the source-backed detail only when needed
Breaks the planLoch Ard Gorge beach is closed for this trip.

The beach staircase has been shut since May 2023 after a rockfall and geotechnical inspection. GORCAPA says the remediation project is aiming to reopen the beach by October 2026, subject to planning approval — so it will not be available on 17 August.

Fix → The clifftops are unaffected. Use the scheduled 45 minutes for the main gorge viewpoints and Razorback. The Arch, Thunder Cave, Broken Head, Tom & Eva, Mutton Bird Island and the cemetery form a wider network; allow about 90 minutes if you want that full circuit and drop a western stop.
Book nowSt Kilda penguins need a free booked ticket, and sessions fill quickly.

Viewing now runs from the dedicated platform in two booked sessions each night. Sessions are about 45 minutes and begin roughly 30 and 90 minutes after sunset. Tickets are free, released every Tuesday from 10:00 AEST for the following week's sessions, and the official site says they book out quickly.

Today → The release for your Tuesday 18 August visit opened on Tuesday 11 August at 10:00 AEST. Check availability now; if it is sold out, the official site recommends checking again for cancelled tickets. Keep the evening optional until you have the e-ticket.
Solo-driver riskDay 1 is 5¼ hours of winding driving, alone, off a long-haul, on the left.

The draft's advice was "swap drivers if there are two of you". There aren't. The Apollo Bay → Lavers Hill → Twelve Apostles stretch is the worst of it — forest, no phone signal, kangaroos and wallabies at dusk — and you'd hit it at hour nine of your day. Port Campbell is booked, so the night can't move.

Fix → Move the Twelve Apostles to sunrise on Day 2. Sun up at 07:12, fifteen minutes from your bed, usually far quieter than midday, with first light on the stacks. That takes the deadline off Day 1 entirely — you drive to arrive, not to catch light. A hard decision point goes in at Apollo Bay, 16:00. Plan B keeps the sunset version if you land clean and feel strong.
Arrange nowNRMA Port Campbell needs an after-hours plan.

Published winter reception hours conflict: the NRMA guest-information PDF says 08:00–18:00, while the current BIG4 partner page says reception may run to 18:30. Plan A's 18:15 arrival has almost no disruption buffer; Plan B's 18:35 arrival is later than both. You also leave before reception opens.

Fix → Contact NRMA Port Campbell Holiday Park before travel on 03 5598 6492 or portcampbell@nrmaparksandresorts.com.au. Ask for the late-arrival/key-collection procedure and confirm the early key drop. Save the instructions offline.
Connection checkedThe 12:30 SkyBus is a valid connection for the 14:55 Jetstar flight.

The current Wednesday service reaches Avalon at 13:40, 75 minutes before JQ608. SkyBus explicitly says Avalon City Express meets major departing flights. Jetstar's domestic check-in and bag drop closes at 14:15, while the boarding gate closes at 14:35.

Verdict → The 12:30 SkyBus is workable and is scheduled to meet the flight, but the meaningful margin is only 35 minutes from bus arrival to bag-drop close. Check in online, be at Bay 74 by 12:10 and go straight to bag drop. There is no comfortable recovery from a material road delay; choose an earlier/private transfer if that risk is not acceptable.
Venue closedThe Art Gallery of Ballarat's main building is closed for upgrades.

The gallery no longer works as the centrepiece of Monday afternoon, and the original Eureka Flag is displayed at the Eureka Centre, not in the closed gallery building.

Fix → Visit the Eureka Centre from 14:00–15:00 (daily 10:00–17:00, adult $7), then Lydiard Street and Lake Wendouree. Sovereign Hill is also closed to general visitors on Mondays, so the Eureka Centre is the strongest indoor anchor.
Changed venueCircular Quay Wharf 6 is shut for your entire trip.

Captain Cook lists Wharf 6 as closed from 20 July – 28 August 2026, with its affected services using Commissioner's Steps, roughly 170 metres towards the Harbour Bridge. The Manly ferry is unaffected; it runs from Wharf 3.

Fix → If you book Captain Cook, arrive at Commissioner's Steps fifteen minutes early. If you choose another operator, follow the boarding place on that operator's current ticket rather than assuming the venue.
MoneyMelbourne contactless now works network-wide for full-fare travel.

You can tap a Visa or Mastercard card, phone or watch on metropolitan trains, trams and buses. It charges the same fares as Myki. Public-transport fares are also half price until 1 January 2027: Zone 1+2 is $2.85 for two hours and $5.70 for a weekday day cap.

Fix → Use the same contactless device for every trip. No Myki is needed if you are paying the adult full fare; concessions and passes still need Myki. Inside the Free Tram Zone, do not tap at all.
Worth knowingThe Twelve Apostles is a $126m construction site until late 2026.

The new Visitor Experience Centre is due later in 2026. In August, expect construction fencing, temporary parking arrangements and diversions around the precinct; the new centre's future booking and fee model is not yet part of this trip.

Fix → No advance booking is required for your August visit. Follow site signage and allow a few extra minutes to walk from temporary parking.
Road statusUpgrade works continue on the Great Ocean Road and inland routes.

Current projects can introduce reduced speeds, traffic control and short delays on the coast road and alternatives such as Colac–Lavers Hill Road and Cobden–Port Campbell Road. No trip-long closure was listed in the official project information checked on 11 August.

Fix → Check VicTraffic the night before and again at breakfast. Keep the Apollo Bay decision point: if conditions, fatigue or delays stack up, take the inland route and protect Day 2's sunrise stops.
ConfirmedWhat the draft got right

Sovereign Hill is closed to general visitors on Mondays. Queen Victoria Market is open Tuesday, 06:00–15:00, with specialty shops from 09:00. NGV is open daily, 10:00–17:00, and its general collection is free. Sydney's adult contactless caps are $19.30 Monday–Thursday and $9.65 Friday–Sunday. August is also peak whale season, although sightings and sea conditions are never guaranteed.

Only take Plan B if all three are true

  • You're through the airport and moving by 09:45.
  • You're at Apollo Bay by 15:45.
  • You slept on the plane and don't feel the 3pm wall coming.
  • Two out of three isn't enough. Miss any one and revert to Plan A — the Apostles will be there at 07:15 tomorrow, in better light and usually with far fewer visitors.

The 16:00 Apollo Bay decision

  • On time and feeling fine → carry on over Lavers Hill as planned.
  • Behind, tired, or raining hard → take the inland route: Skenes Creek → Colac (C119) → Princes Hwy → Camperdown → Port Campbell. You lose the Otways and gain about 45 minutes of straighter, easier road, arriving well before dark.
  • Genuinely unsafe to continue → Apollo Bay has motels. Losing a booked Port Campbell night costs money. Hitting a tree at dusk on a forest road, alone, with no signal, costs rather more.
  • Kangaroos and wallabies are most active at dawn and in the hour either side of dusk, and Apollo Bay → Lavers Hill is where people hit them. If one is on the road: brake straight, don't swerve.

Why this Ballarat version works

  • Sovereign Hill is closed to general visitors on Mondays, and the Art Gallery of Ballarat's main building is closed for upgrades. The Eureka Centre is open, inexpensive and displays the original flag, so it gives the afternoon a reliable anchor rather than a locked door.

The honest trade

  • The total wheel time is about 40 minutes longer than the Ballarat route, but the risk is concentration: the 3h15 return leg is unbroken instead of split around an afternoon stop.
  • Whales are not guaranteed. Some days Logans Beach has three mothers and calves; some days it has nothing at all.
  • You already have a second whale opportunity in Sydney on Day 7, from a boat, in the same peak season. Ballarat has no substitute later in the trip.
  • Take this only if wildlife genuinely beats heritage for you, and you're comfortable with the drive.

Thu 20 Aug · Day Five · Sydney

Opera House, ferry, Manly

☀ 06:29  🌇 17:28

Start on foot from Potts Point, descend to Woolloomooloo, then climb gently into the Domain before crossing the harbour. The 14 August BOM forecast for the Sydney coast is 10–19°C, partly cloudy, with a 30% rain chance and 0–1 mm forecast. The Manly ferry is one of Sydney's best-value views, and you're taking it in the quieter direction at exactly the right hour.

Day 6 · Friday 21 August

Cheapest day of the trip
Three Sisters, Blue Mountains
Fri 21 Aug · Day Six · Day trip

Two hours west, by train

🌇 17:33  🌡 6–8°C colder

Your one big day trip, and there are two good answers. West into the Blue Mountains for the dramatic landscape — best in winter, when the eucalypt haze that names them is strongest — or north to Newcastle for six beaches, Edwardian ocean baths and a flat clifftop path that handles low cloud better. Either way it's a fare-capped Friday, so the whole day's transport costs under ten dollars.

Trackwork on Friday 21 August

  • Buses replace trains only between Lithgow and Mount Victoria from Monday 17 to Friday 21 August. Katoomba is east of Mount Victoria, so a direct Central–Katoomba trip remains viable.
  • Trains between Mount Victoria and Central run to a changed timetable. Ignore any fixed departure printed months ahead: check Transport for NSW Trip Planner the evening before and again at breakfast.

Winter in the mountains

  • Katoomba runs 6–8°C colder than Sydney — think 10°C by day, 2°C in the morning. Wind on the escarpment makes it feel worse. Proper jacket, hat, gloves.
  • Fog and rain are common and the lookouts can white out completely. If Friday's forecast is bad, swap this with Saturday — the coast is fine in cloud, the mountains are not.
  • Sunset is 17:33, but the valleys darken from about 16:45. Don't start a descent after 15:00.
  • Phone signal is patchy off the main streets. Screenshot the return timetable before you leave Katoomba station.

Australia's second-oldest city, and the one Sydneysiders are quietly smug about. A working coal harbour on one side, six beaches and a chain of Edwardian ocean baths on the other, joined by a 6 km clifftop path. Flat, sunny, and — unlike the mountains — it does not fog out.

Why you might pick Newcastle over the mountains

  • Weather. Katoomba can fog in until the lookouts white out. Newcastle is the lower-elevation fallback; compare both live forecasts before choosing.
  • It's flat. The Bathers Way is a sealed path at sea level. The Blue Mountains day means stairs, cliff edges and air 6–8°C colder.
  • Whales again. Newcastle sits directly on the migration route and the clifftop lookouts cost nothing.
  • Same Friday cap. Newcastle is inside the Opal network, so the day still caps at $9.65 — a five-hour return train journey for under ten dollars.

What you give up — and one knock-on

  • The landscape. The Three Sisters, the Jamison Valley and a 52° railway have no equivalent in Newcastle. If you only ever do one of these, do the mountains.
  • An extra hour on the train each way — 2h33 against about 2h.
  • Knock-on for Saturday: take Newcastle on Friday and you'll already have done a long coastal clifftop walk. In that case choose the whale cruise on Day 7 rather than Bondi to Coogee, or you'll be repeating yourself.

Whales, cliffs, last night

🌇 17:29  🐋 changeover week

Your dates sit on the changeover — the last humpbacks heading north and the first heading south pass at the same time, and August is when young males breach most theatrically. You can meet them from a boat or from a clifftop. Both are good; only one can be cancelled by weather.

Booking the cruise

  • Pick a flexible fare. August seas off Sydney can be big and cruises are cancelled or rescheduled regularly. A free-reschedule ticket means a cancellation costs you nothing but the morning.
  • Book Saturday morning. If it's cancelled, switch straight to Option B rather than trying to squeeze it in before a 13:05 flight on Sunday.
  • Take a seasickness tablet 45 minutes before boarding whether or not you think you need one. Outside the Heads is not the harbour.
08:30
T4 Kings Cross → Bondi Junction, then bus 333 or 380 to Bondi BeachThere is no direct 333 from Kings Cross. Allow time for the change at Bondi Junction and use the same contactless card or device on both legs.

Bondi → Coogee clifftop walk6 km, about two hours at a walking pace, longer if you stop — and you will. Bondi → Tamarama → Bronte → Waverley Cemetery → Clovelly → Gordons Bay → Coogee. Sealed path, some stairs. Scan the water from the headlands: August humpbacks pass close enough to see from land, and Waverley Cemetery, with its graves stacked above the Pacific, is both the best vantage point and the most striking thing on this whole list.

Why this might be the better option

  • It's free, it's weatherproof in a way a boat isn't, and it's one of the great urban coastal walks anywhere.
  • You'll very likely see whales regardless — from a stable clifftop, without seasickness.
  • If the forecast for Friday was bad and you swapped the Blue Mountains to today, this is the day that moves.

Roughly 10¾ hours of daylight. That's the constraint this whole plan is built around — not opening hours, not distance.

🚗 Driving, solo, on the left

Before you leave the airport

  • Download offline maps for the whole Otways region — signal dies past Apollo Bay.
  • Set up the phone mount and audio before you move.
  • Photograph every panel of the car.
  • Sit for five minutes and find the indicators. Everyone wipes the windscreen at their first roundabout.

On the road

  • Keep left. The centre line stays by your right shoulder.
  • Fuel at Lorne, Apollo Bay or Port Campbell. Stations west of Apollo Bay are sparse and close early.
  • Kangaroos and wallabies at dawn and around dusk, worst on Apollo Bay → Lavers Hill. Brake straight, don't swerve.
  • Use the marked slow-vehicle turnouts. Nothing on this road is worth a queue behind you.
  • Check VicTraffic each morning. The road flooded badly in January 2026 and repairs continued through the year.

Because you're alone

  • Nobody will tell you you're tired. Stop every 90 minutes, even when you feel fine — especially on Day 1, when your body thinks it's the middle of the night.
  • Tell someone your rough plan and check in each evening. Signal is absent for long stretches of Day 1.
  • Emergency is 000. The roadside-assistance number goes into your phone at the rental desk, not later.
  • The 16:00 Apollo Bay decision is a real decision. Make it honestly.
